W.E.B. Du Bois was an American civil rights activist, sociologist, historian, author, and editor. He was one of the most influential African-American activists of the early 20th century. He was the first African-American to earn a doctorate from Harvard University. He was a co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and editor of its magazine, The Crisis. Du Bois was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to Alfred and Mary Silvina Burghardt Du Bois. He attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and Harvard University, where he earned a doctorate in 1895. He taught at Wilberforce University and the University of Pennsylvania before joining the faculty of Atlanta University in 1897. Du Bois was a prolific writer and editor, publishing several books and articles on race and civil rights. His most famous work, The Souls of Black Folk (1903), is considered a classic of African-American literature. He also wrote several novels, including The Quest of the Silver Fleece (1911) and Dark Princess (1928). Du Bois was a vocal advocate for civil rights and racial equality. He was a leader in the Niagara Movement, a precursor to the NAACP, and was a founding member of the NAACP in 1909. He was also a leader in the Pan-African movement, which sought to unite African-Americans and Africans in the struggle for civil rights. Du Bois died in Accra, Ghana, on August 27, 1963. He was 95 years old.
