Robert Ballard is an American oceanographer and explorer who is best known for his discoveries of the wrecks of the RMS Titanic in 1985 and the German battleship Bismarck in 1989. He is the founder and president of the Ocean Exploration Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the world's oceans. Ballard was born in Wichita, Kansas, and grew up in Pacific Grove, California. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1965. He then joined the United States Navy, where he served as a deep-sea submersible pilot. In 1977, Ballard joined the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) as a research associate. He was later appointed as a senior scientist and director of the WHOI Deep Submergence Laboratory. In 1985, Ballard and his team discovered the wreck of the RMS Titanic, which had been lost for 73 years. The discovery made Ballard a celebrity and he was featured in numerous television documentaries and interviews. In 1989, Ballard and his team discovered the wreck of the German battleship Bismarck, which had been lost for 48 years. In addition to his work as an oceanographer, Ballard has written several books, including The Discovery of the Titanic (1987), Exploring the Lusitania (1995), and The Eternal Darkness (2000). Ballard is currently the president of the Ocean Exploration Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the world's oceans. He is also a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island.
